Honey Butter is creamy, dreamy, and one of my absolute favorite condiments to make. Take it over the top by whipping it with an electric mixer – then top it with a pinch of salt. It is the perfect finishing touch for just about any dish.
Spread on warm Southern cornbread, onto a slice of homemade beer bread, or mashed into cooked sweet potatoes – oh my goodness, it is seriously the best. (I personally love to put a little honey butter on a buttermilk muffin for breakfast. It is a little over the top, but so good!)
This homemade whipped honey butter recipe is my favorite finishing touch for savory dishes like jalapeño cornbread that just need a little something sweet. This delicious, sweet butter is so easy to make and uses such simple ingredients that we always have in the house.

🥘 Ingredients Needed
- Regular Butter – For best results, I recommend using room temperature butter, not melted butter, so the honey and butter can whip together and better combine. I like to use salted butter and add a pinch of sea salt, but you can use unsalted butter and top the butter with salt after it is prepared.
- Honey – I like to use local honey because we have allergies, but use your favorite honey!
- Flaky Sea Salt – I like to use Maldon Flaky Sea Salt.
- Optional – To make cinnamon honey butter, add: Vanilla Extract & Ground Cinnamon.
🍽 Equipment Needed
- An Electric Hand Mixer – I don’t like to use a stand mixer for this because it doesn’t quite get down far enough into the bowl or scrape the edges of the bowl very well.
- A Small Bowl
- A Rubber Spatula
How to Make Whipped Butter
I love to whip my honey butter because I love the fluffy texture. It is so much more spreadable when it is light and fluffy. It is also such an easy recipe to make – even though it sounds complicated.
You just take a stick of butter (and it MUST be softened butter) and whip it until it is smooth and fluffy in a small mixing bowl, then stir in the honey.
Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula to make sure you get all the honey.
At this point, I like to split the honey butter into two containers; in one, I store the regular honey butter, and in another, I will add vanilla extract and cinnamon to make cinnamon honey butter.
This version is so delicious on a roasted sweet potato.
You can also add a little bit of confectioners sugar to make it closer to a “Copycat Texas Roadhouse Butter.” The sugar makes it super creamy and takes it to another dimension.
🫙 How to Store Honey Butter
I like to store homemade honey butter in an airtight container or a small mason jar in the refrigerator. (It looks cute and will stay fresh in a jar.) Take it out about a half hour before serving it.
A little jar of honey butter is also a great hostess gift if you are showing up to a dinner party. I love to bring a small jar with some homemade cornbread. Everyone loves a dollop of honey butter on some warm bread or some hot dinner rolls.
🧈 Whipped Butter Variations
- Whipped Lemon Butter – Combine a few huge squeezes of lemon juice (about 2 tablespoons) and the lemon zest from half of a lemon with a stick of softened salted butter to make whipped lemon butter. Add a pinch of salt and taste. This compound butter is delicious for muffins, bread, fish, and vegetables. It is super versatile. Honey is optional here. I like it when making butter for muffins and bread, but I would leave it out for fish and veggies.
- Whipped Orange Butter – Combine a few huge squeezes of fresh orange juice (about 2 tablespoons) and about a teaspoon of orange zest with a stick of softened salted butter to make whipped orange butter. This compound butter is delicious for muffins, scones, and bread. I would leave the honey in the butter here. Add a pinch of salt and taste.
- Vanilla Bean Whipped Honey Butter – Scrape the insides of a vanilla bean into this recipe. Let it sit before serving to let the flavor develop.
- Copycat Texas Roadhouse Butter – Combine 1 stick of softened salted butter with 1/4 cup powdered sugar, 1 1/2 tablespoons of honey, and 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Whip until light and fluffy. I like to serve this one on hot rolls or on honey oat bread. It melts into all of the nooks and crannies.
